Went jogging yesterday & Why I post this stuff.

August 29th, 2009 by matt

Jogged behind the station yesterday. 3.86 miles in 42 minutes. My left knee was starting to get a little sore towards the end, so I walked a little more often. No lasting soreness though.

The squat rack was busy today, so skipped squats & overhead press and went straight to pull ups.

Weightlifting Session #8

August 21st, 2009 by matt

I should also say that I did go jogging at work 2 days ago. I alternated walking & jogging for 3 miles, then walked another half mile. 3.5 miles total, 43 minutes. No knee pain, so I’m pretty happy about the whole thing.

Today’s workout:

District 9

August 20th, 2009 by matt

Liz and I went to see District 9 this evening.

Wow. What a great movie.

I’ll try not to spoil anything by saying too much about the movie. And unlike The Time Traveler’s Wife, I don’t have any serious criticisms that require examples.

Weightlifting Session #7 & doctor’s visit.

August 18th, 2009 by matt

From now on I’m going to try to record details of my weight routine on the blog. Yeah, it’s probably boring for anybody but me, but it seems like a reasonable place for it.

The Time Traveler’s Wife

August 17th, 2009 by matt

A while ago, Molly gave Liz a copy of The Time Traveler’s Wife by Audrey Niffenegger. Liz seemed to like it and I mentally put it on my list of books to read someday. Recently the book was made into a movie and I thought it would be a good idea to read the book before seeing the movie.

The Good News: The Time Traveler’s Wife is a very well written, thoughtful book. Its the sort of book you pick up and don’t want to put down because you get so absorbed in the story. The characters are interesting and full of contradictions. The author deals intelligently with the philosophical implications of time travel.

The Bad News: This book is not a pleasant read. The book says some very unpleasant things about free will and about the nature of “romantic” relationships. The fact that these things are hard to refute make the book even more unpleasant.

My weightlifting program.

August 15th, 2009 by matt

I lifted weights today. Workout number 6 since I started back up again at the end of July.

My workout program is loosely based on the “forty day workout program” that Dan John describes in one of his articles. Notice the word “loosely”. For one thing, I think Dan John intended the 40 day workout to be done 5 or six days a week for 7 or 8 weeks. I don’t intend to lift weights more than every 3 days. Also, the program as Dan John describes it is very unstructured, where you do a general warmup and then lift what you feel like for 2 sets of 5 in each of your exercises. I’m aiming for 3 sets of 5 and I’m adding warmup sets, as described in Mark Riptoe’s Starting Strength. Also, I have no plan to change it up after 40 days (or even 40 workouts.) I plan to change it up when it doesn’t seem to be working anymore, i.e. 3 or 4 workouts in a row where I’m no longer seeing some sort of measurable improvement.

Elvis Is Alive

August 12th, 2009 by matt

I ran a 5k last Thursday (Aug 6) in Grant Park. My time was 27:40, which is my best 5k time so far this year. It was a fun race; about 2500 people, with maybe 100 of them dressed as Elvis. The course went up and down the lake in front of Monroe Harbor. At first it was very congested; 2500 people cannot run together on a 10 foot wide path. It just doesn’t work. After about a mile we had spread out enough that I didn’t have to slow down waiting for room to pass people.

My Back Injury

I started a new weight lifting program this week.  I blogged my previous program at http://stronglifts.com/forum/matt-moran-s-training-log-t14573.html.  It went really well until I hurt myself.
